Two unnamed men trapped inside a mysterious room pass the time by acting out the lives of the residents of Ballyturk, an imaginary Irish town.
As the story telling games of 1 and 2 grow darker the men confront mortality and fear. Ballyturk is funny, physical, absurd, achingly sad, tender.
Irish playwright Enda Walsh has been named “one of the most dazzling wordsmiths of contemporary theatre” (The Guardian). His plays include Disco Pigs,The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom. His screenplays are Hunger, Small Things Like These, The House and Die My Love. Walsh’s many awards include a Tony and New York Drama Critics’ Circle award for Best Musical for Once, the Camera D’or for Hunger (co-written by Steve McQueen) and an IFTA award for Small Things Like These.
Ballyturk premiered at the Galway International Theatre Festival in 2014 then transferred to the National Theatre London. The play “delights in its own bizarreness and abrupt changes of mood” (Daily Express, 2014).
