A Czech Gambit
This new play by Hamilton playwright, Russell Armitage, is probably the first play by a New Zealander to be performed in the Czech Republic, which it was in 2023. It was commissioned by the Prague International Chess Festival. Such was the success, another production is being planned.
It is based on the true story of a Czech Chess Grandmaster in his early years and is full of drama, intrigue, struggle, game-fixing, courage, success and finally escape to freedom. Although set in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s-60s, its themes are universal.
This New Zealand premier of a very special play will be a theatrical highlight in Hamilton for 2026.
