SUMMARY:Dreams in Mirrors\, Mirrors in Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Dreams in Mirrors\, Mirrors in Dreams \nAn exhibition by Zixuan Gong \nWhen artificial intelligence enters artistic creation\, is it ultimately a mirror that reflects reality\, or a dreamscape unbound by reality? \nThis exhibition presents 17 calligraphic works\, of which five are AI-generated pseudo-characters and twelve are hand-copied by the artist. In the creative process\, the artist does not compel the AI to act as a mirror\, demanding an objectively accurate mapping of reality. Instead\, the AI is permitted to “think” through its own inherent operational logic. Based on the structure of Chinese characters in the training dataset\, AI imagines form that conform to calligraphic aesthetics yet carry no real-world semantics—they are as unbridled as dreams\, yet like reflections in a mirror\, they map the statistical probabilities of the dataset.  \nIn the gallery\, the AI works are displayed on fixed perimeter walls\, while the hand-written pieces stand on mobile partitions in the center\, creating a face-to-face dialogue. As viewers move between them\, they find themselves caught in a constant state of comparison\, hesitation\, and judgment between readable and unrecognizable generations. For audiences unfamiliar with Chinese characters\, this difficulty of discernment is amplified: both genuine and pseudo-scripts are stripped of their linguistic function\, reduced to pure visual symbols. What remains is a primal play of ink\, rhythm\, and space. \nThis exhibition does not seek to answer whether AI can replace the artist. Instead\, it serves as a site of inquiry. When machines can mimic brushstrokes\, structure\, and even Qi\, where does human creative agency truly reside? At the intersection of the mirror and the dream\, perhaps we can truly begin to contemplate—that which is fundamentally human\, and must never be ceded. \n\nZixuan Gong is a visual artist whose practice bridges the realms of imagery and algorithms. He is currently a PhD candidate in Screen and Media Studies at the University of Waikato. \nOver the past two decades\, Gong has dedicated his work to light and shadow as a narrative language\, traversing the boundaries between cinematography and contemporary art. Collaborative works to which he has contributed as a key creative have been showcased at prestigious international festivals\, and art institutions. \nIn recent years\, his creative research has pivoted toward generative artificial intelligence\, interrogating the dual metaphor of the algorithm as both Mirror and Dream—a mechanism that reflects collective human experience while simultaneously transcending the logic of reality through autonomous generation. \n\nPlease join us at the opening event for Dreams in Mirrors\, Mirrors in Dreams on Saturday 30th May\, 12pm. \nThe Nancy Caiger Gallery is open 11am-2pm from Wednesday to Saturday. If you’d like to visit this exhibition outside of these opening hours\, please email kiaora@themeteor.co.nz

SUMMARY:Ration the Queen’s Veges
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes all you need to inspire change is a piece of gum. \nCo-written by Te Wehi Ratana and Tainui Tukiwaho \nDirected by Tainui Tukiwaho \nIn December 2023 the group ‘Te Waka Hourua’ set the country alight when they painted over the English Treaty of Waitangi Exhibition at Te Papa to read… ‘No. Her Majesty the Queen of England the alien. ration the Queens veges.’ This ‘redaction action’ provoked strong opinions across Aotearoa – some sang their praises\, others called for blood. While all of the artists were charged\, only one received prison time: Te Wehi Ratana. \nThis uplifting new one-man play is inspired by true events\, and shares the remarkable experience of the abseiling activist during his 48 hours at Rimutaka Prison. \nRation the Queen’s veges is a story of how one action can inspire change in unlikely places. It is a story about the quiet voice of defiance that still burns within us even when we are silenced – a piece of gum and Brian\, Te Wehi’s ingenious cellmate\, were all that was needed to fan the flames and hear them roar. \nPremiere season presented by Te Pou Theatre in partnership with Auckland Arts Festival 2025\, with support from Circa Theatre. \n\nContent warning: This show contains coarse language that may be offensive to some. \nRunning time: 50 mins\, no interval.

SUMMARY:Daylight Savings
DESCRIPTION:Twenty-five years ago the heat became unbearable. In desperation\, humanity deployed a planetary shroud that blocked the sun’s heat. It was meant to be temporary\, but when the time came to remove it\, the darkness could not be undone. Now\, in a chain superstore called Daylight Savings\, three young workers and their manager grind through another endless shift. Everything changes when two intruders arrive with a plan to clear the sky and bring back sunshine. \n\nTickets coming soon!

SUMMARY:TAIWHETUKI
DESCRIPTION:TAIWHETUKI \nWhare whakamataku o Whiro Ariki (Lord Whiro’s House of Horrors) \nAn exhibition by Adym Kohi \n  \nIn the subterranean underworld of Rarohenga there is a place where the putrescence of death is home. Where spirits of the dead can be destroyed. TAIWHETUKI. \nIt is the domain of Whiro-te-Tipua\, the loathsome son of Ranginui and Papatūānuku. \nTaiwhetuki is a labyrinth of horrors and decay\, stretching its wicked\, reeking tunnels through the underworld\, each crevice writhing with earthly and supernatural manifestations of evil. \nFrom his throne\, the dark master conjures plagues and sickness\, devious black magic\, and seething tides of misfortune\, all sent to drown the living. \nHis messengers come as creatures that bear disdain\, lizards\, bats\, insects\, and carrion feasting birds. They are his eyes\, ears\, and voice on earth. \nIn his wharekai\, he feeds constantly on the flesh and souls of the dead\, growing bigger with every soul funnelled down his woesome gullet. \nWhen Lord Whiro has consumed his fill and grown strong enough to escape his abyss in Rarohenga\, he will erupt from the earth to devour every living thing and plunge the world in to ghastly eternal darkness. \nHis sibling and only ally\, mighty Ruaumoko\, the Lord of all disaster\, of volcanoes and earthquakes\, will herald his coming. \nTAIWHETUKI is the second instalment of ‘Kohi o te Taniwha\, and other tales of despair \n\nAdym Kohi is an artist of Māori and Anglo-Celtic descent based in the Waikato region of Aotearoa. Born and raised in the Bay of Plenty among the sulfuric miasma of Rotorua\, he grew up inspired by the many archaic myths and legends of the land\, greater Aotearoa\, and the vast ancient world beyond. \n\nA lifelong love of horror and storytelling has shaped these inspirations to form his   unique collections of dark fantasy art. \n\nThe Nancy Caiger Gallery is open 11am-2pm from Wednesday to Saturday.
