SUMMARY:Architecture of Connection
DESCRIPTION:Architecture of Connection \nAn exhibition by Ruth Hickman \nPaintings explore tension and harmony between the organic and the constructed. The exhibition brings together two distinct visual languages – fluid acrylic gestures and the disciplined precision of wrapped thread – to examine how opposing forces can coexist within a single surface. The interplay between paint and thread is crucial – stitched lines act as both connectors and boundaries – they tether the abstract forms while simultaneously implying tension and fragility. The surface shifts between control and chance\, giving the sense that the artist is mapping something intangible: perhaps emotion\, time\, or loss. \nThis series examine linkage\, flow\, and resonance – how elements communicate across space. The stitched lines evolve from boundaries into bridges\, threads that weave one form into another rather than dividing them\, moving towards an expression of the invisible architecture of relationships\, energy\, or shared memory. \nRuth aims to provide a dynamic and immersive environment that encourages viewers to experience art in a more engaging and spatially integrated way. A series of canvases\, stretched and unstretched\, vary in size from very small to large scale. \n\nRuth Hickman’s career as an artist and art educator began during her time at London’s Kensington & Chelsea College\, followed by completing a BMA hons at Wintec\, Hamilton. In addition to making art\, Ruth is the Volunteer Art Gallery Coordinator at Raglan Arts Centre and a member of the Creative Communities Scheme representative for Raglan Arts Council. \nRecent paintings explore the tension between the organic and constructed\, examining how opposing forces can coexist within a single surface. This reflects dualities that shape both the natural world and our inner lives. \nRuth has exhibited her work in the Waikato\, Auckland and Melbourne. \n\nPlease join us at the opening event for Architecture of Connection on Saturday 19th September\, 12-2pm. \nThe Nancy Caiger Gallery is open 11am-2pm from Wednesday to Saturday. SUMMARY:The Wallypug of Why
DESCRIPTION:Based on the Victorian nonsense novel of the same name\, ‘The Wallypug of Why’ follows Girlie and her little sister\, Junior\, who are very disappointed to be left at home while their brother goes adventuring at the beach. That is\, until their dolly comes to life and takes them on a magical adventure of their own. Together\, they travel to ‘The Land of Why’\, in search of a mysterious creature called a ‘Goo’. There\, they meet The Wallypug\, The Doctor-in-Law\, Madame Penguin\, and many other strange and interesting characters. \nEveryone in ‘The Land of Why’ seems to speak in riddles\, leaving Girlie and Junior awfully confused and lost! But can they make it home before Aunty Ellen finds them missing? Come and find out! \nThe story is full of word play\, puppets\, visual puns\, and magic. There is something for everyone in this silly\, adventurous little play. Adults and children alike are bound to leave chuckling. \n\nRunning time: 120 mins \nNote: the 7pm show on Thurs 1 October is a relaxed performance where there will be less lighting\, quieter music\, etc – all are welcome! No food will be allowed during this particular showing. Normal food and drink rules apply to all other performances of The Wallypug of Why!
