Wintec | Te Pūkenga Performing Arts presents The Drowsy Chaperone, a hilarious parody of classic Broadway musicals.
The show opens with a man in a chair, alone and asking the audience if he can play his favourite record, a cast recording of The Drowsy Chaperone. As the vinyl crackles, the musical comes to life in his living room and we watch the farcical antics of the show’s characters: Janet and her fiancé Robert, a European lothario, gangsters, a money-hungry producer, a ditzy wannabe star, a forgetful madame and her long-suffering butler, and the very tipsy, very drowsy chaperone of Janet.
Making fun of all the tropes and conventions of musical theatre, The Drowsy Chaperone features show-stopping song-and-dance numbers, rousing anthems, and sumptuous ballads, all supported by a rollicking jazz ensemble. The show is warm, funny, affectionate, heartfelt, and satirical, often at the same time.
