Toi Wāhine: A Revealing Thyme

Thursday, 2nd August, 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

On January 28th, 1861, the immigrant ship, the Lady Egidia docked at Port Chalmers, New Zealand. Disembarking passengers included Arthur and Mary Best, from Chatham, Kent. Lured by reports of fortune and health, Mary and Arthur were eager to discover what possibilities awaited them…

Through the anecdotes and properties of medicinal plants, Mary Best reveals love, hope, despair and loss, as the play weaves aspects of colonial history with an emotional journey into one-woman’s life. It conjures images of our gold mining frontier and reveals colonial ideas of health and wellness. A Revealing Thyme is a captivating and enchanting performance that will stay with you long after you leave.

A Revealing Thyme is written and performed by Hamilton writer, actor and researcher, Joanna Bishop. Joanna has completed her doctorate on the history of medicinal plant use in colonial New Zealand.
